States Eyeing Charities to Make up Tax Shortfalls

It is just a matter of time before failing state governments start tapping into the coffers of charities to make up for their shortfalls in tax revenues. Charities may have a hard time avoiding property taxes if they do any fundraising on premises, according to oral arguments made before the Georgia Supreme Court Tuesday.

Representatives from various nonprofit organizations filled the seats as the seven justices on the high court heard — and questioned — lawyers from Athens and from a foundation there over what’s allowed under a 2006 constitutional amendment approved by voters and a 2007 law that provides the legal details.
